Have you ever been in a situation where you could have spoken up for yourself but you didn’t? Do you consistently delay asking your boss for that well deserved and earned raise? Have you recently sat for hours updating your resume only to talk yourself out of applying for a new job because you didn’t meet 100 percent of the qualifications? Do you often compare yourself to other women when it comes to your looks or success?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, be kind, be compassionate, but also I need you to be honest with yourself. You have doubted yourself, your worth and your capabilities for far too long!
Can you say, frustrating?
It is tremendously frustrating to stay on the cycle of low self-confidence, playing small and holding ourselves back. And if we’re honest, (which is required to grow) every woman has experienced self-doubt and low confidence in some area of her life! Temporary or episodes of self-doubt isn’t the problem, the problem is when you consistently allow self-doubt to prevent you from striving forward in your personal and professional life.
I get it!
You weren’t born with confidence, therefore, let’s explore six tips to help you develop your confidence and start thriving forward!
Are you ready?
Tip # 1: Take Ownership of Your Individuality
In a world of billions of people, there’s only one you. The problem? The problem happens when you fail to acknowledge your individuality is a powerful asset to your personal and professional life. Therefore, it’s essential to start owning your uniqueness and appreciating yourself. Take 5-10 minutes and write down at least 5 things you love about yourself. This will immediately boost your confidence.
Tip # 2: Do Something that Scares You
Staying in your comfort zone has a way of decreasing your confidence. Therefore, every week set a goal to do one thing outside of your norm. Watch how your confidence increases and opens doors to new opportunities!
Tip # 3: Learn Something New
Challenge your mind each week by learning a new skill. This will keep you relevant and relatable to others as well as increase your feelings of having something to offer in different conversations.
Tip # 4: Compliment another Woman
When you see another woman who’s doing great on a project, looks beautiful or did an amazing job on her work presentation, compliment her. Confident women are not intimidated nor distracted by the skills, gifts and talents of other women. Complimenting another woman will boost your confidence and give another woman a confidence boost as well.
Tip # 5: Take Care of Your Mental, Emotional and Physical Health
Exercise at least 5 days per week for 30 minutes doing moderate-intensity level activities. In addition to exercising, eat well balanced meals throughout the day and take brain breaks from your work. Investing in your own personal well-being will increase feelings of self-worth and importance. This will add to building your confidence.
Tip # 6: Stop Saying Sorry:
Stop apologizing all the time when you haven’t said or done anything intentionally wrong to harm or disrespect someone. Each and every time you apologize or say sorry when you want to speak up in a meeting, you diminish your voice, authority and position in life. Instead of saying sorry, say, “I would like to add additional perspectives on this topic”. If you’re at the table or in the room, you belong there!
It’s Okay to Show Up Confident!
Historically women have been taught we’re too aggressive or unlikable when we speak up for ourselves or we’re too much if we’re confident. Have you bought into this social programming and conditioning? If you have, this belief system may be robbing you of feeling confident about who you are and what you bring to your personal and professional life!
